A broad family of cleaning-power ingredients that can irritate skin and eyes, especially when used concentrated.
"Anionic surfactants" isn't one chemical but a whole class of foaming/cleaning agents (like sulfates and soaps) used in detergents and household cleaners. Diluted, as used in normal washing, most are low-risk; concentrated or undiluted, they can dry out or irritate skin and eyes.

Why it matters
Surfactants are the molecules that let water mix with grease and dirt, so they're the main 'cleaning' ingredient in laundry detergents, dish soap, and many household cleaners. 'Anionic' describes their electrical charge, which makes them good at foaming and lifting oily grime. This is a category label, not a single substance — it can include things like sodium lauryl sulfate, linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), or plain soap (fatty acid salts). In the body, their main effect is physical: they strip natural oils from skin, which is why they clean but can also dry or irritate. Most people using diluted household products as intended see no problems; people with sensitive or already-damaged skin, eczema, or asthma-type sensitivities to sprays may notice irritation more easily.
