Geraniol
A natural rose-scented fragrance chemical that's generally safe but a known skin allergen for some people.
Geraniol is a fragrance and flavor compound found naturally in rose, citronella and geranium oils. It's safe for most people in the small amounts used in cosmetics and food, but it's one of the substances most likely to trigger allergic skin reactions in susceptible individuals, so EU law requires it to be listed by name when present above a threshold.

Why it matters
Geraniol is a naturally occurring alcohol with a rose-like smell. It's used to add scent to perfumes, lotions, shampoos, candles and household products, and in small amounts as a flavoring in food and drinks. In the body, it doesn't do anything functional — it's purely for smell or taste. Most people can use products containing geraniol with no issue at all. The main group who should care are people with known fragrance allergies or sensitive skin, since geraniol is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis (itchy, red, sometimes blistering skin reactions) linked to fragranced products.
