Hydroxycitronellal
A synthetic fragrance ingredient that smells like lily-of-the-valley but can cause skin allergies in some people.
Hydroxycitronellal is a man-made fragrance chemical used in perfumes, cosmetics, and household scented products. It's not toxic in the way a poison is, but it's a well-known skin sensitizer, meaning repeated exposure can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible people.

Why it matters
Hydroxycitronellal is a synthetic aroma chemical that gives a soft, floral (lily-of-the-valley) scent. It's added to perfumes, lotions, soaps, shampoos, candles, and cleaning products purely for smell — it has no other function in the body. For most people it causes no problem at all. The main concern is for people with fragrance allergies or sensitive skin: it's one of a group of fragrance ingredients recognized to cause allergic skin reactions (contact dermatitis) in a minority of users, especially with repeated exposure to leave-on products like perfume or body lotion.
