Magnesium sulfate
A common mineral salt (Epsom salt) that's safe in cosmetics and food at normal use levels.
Magnesium sulfate is a naturally occurring salt used as a thickener/bulking agent in cosmetics and as a firming or nutrient additive in food. It's well studied, generally recognized as safe, and only causes problems at very high oral doses or in people with kidney issues.

Why it matters
Magnesium sulfate (also known as Epsom salt) is a simple mineral made of magnesium and sulfate ions. In cosmetics it's used to thicken lotions or control viscosity, not to clean skin like a typical surfactant despite the class label here. In food it can act as a firming agent (like in tofu) or a magnesium source. Your body already needs magnesium for muscle and nerve function, so small amounts are not just harmless but sometimes beneficial. Most people never need to think twice about it.
