Paraffin
A refined mineral wax/oil used to soften and seal skin; safe for most cosmetic uses when properly refined.
Paraffin is a petroleum-derived wax or oil used in creams, balms, and ointments to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier. Cosmetic-grade paraffin is highly refined to remove harmful contaminants, making topical use low-risk for most people, though it can trap heat and clog pores in some skin types.

Why it matters
Paraffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons derived from refining crude oil. In cosmetics, it comes as a soft wax or light oil (sometimes called 'liquid paraffin' or 'mineral oil'). It sits on top of skin and forms an occlusive layer, meaning it blocks water from evaporating. This makes it useful in moisturizers, lip balms, ointments (like petroleum jelly-based products), and hair products. It doesn't get absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts through normal skin contact. Most people can use paraffin-containing products without issue, though those with very oily or acne-prone skin may find it feels heavy or contributes to clogged pores.
