Citronellol
A rose-scented fragrance ingredient that's fine for most people but a known skin allergen for some.
Citronellol is a natural fragrance compound found in rose and geranium oil, widely used to scent cosmetics and household products. It's not toxic at the levels used, but it's one of the EU's officially recognised fragrance allergens, meaning it must be labelled if present above a threshold because it can cause allergic skin reactions in sensitised people.

Why it matters
Citronellol is a natural alcohol found in rose, geranium, and citronella oils. Cosmetic and household product makers add it purely for scent - it doesn't do anything functional like preserving or cleaning. For the vast majority of users it's harmless. The main concern is skin allergy: repeated exposure can sensitise some people, leading to contact dermatitis (itchy, red, sometimes blistered skin) on later exposure.
