Why it matters
Cera microcristallina (microcrystalline wax) is a wax refined from petroleum, similar to but finer and stickier than paraffin wax. In cosmetics it acts as a thickener, binder and moisture barrier, helping products like lipstick, lip balm, mascara and creams hold their shape and feel smooth. It doesn't do anything active in the body — it just sits on the skin's surface as a physical barrier. Most people, including those with sensitive skin, tolerate it well because it's chemically stable and non-reactive.
