Benzyl benzoate
A fragrance and solvent ingredient that's safe for most people but a known skin-allergy trigger for some.
Benzyl benzoate is a naturally occurring ester used in cosmetics as a fragrance component, solvent and fixative; historically it's also used medically at high strength to treat scabies. At the low levels found in perfumed products it's not toxic, but it's one of the EU's officially recognised fragrance allergens, so a minority of people with sensitised skin can react to it.

Why it matters
Benzyl benzoate is an ester (a compound made from an acid and an alcohol) found naturally in some flowers and balsams like Peru balsam. In cosmetics and perfumes it helps dissolve other fragrance chemicals and makes scent last longer. It's not really a food or general-purpose preservative despite sometimes being filed under that category - its main modern role is as a fragrance ingredient. Doctors also use it as an active medical ingredient (usually 10-25% lotions) to kill scabies mites and lice, which is a completely different, much higher-dose use than a trace of it in a lotion or perfume.
