"Carni e derivati" (Italian for "meat and animal derivatives") is a broad legal category used on pet food labels to describe muscle meat plus other animal parts like organs, fat, or bone meal. It is not a single substance, additive, or chemical, so it carries no specific toxicity profile — the main concern is that the vague wording doesn't tell you which animal or which parts were used.

Why it matters
This is not an ingredient in the chemical sense — it's a labeling category allowed in EU pet food rules that lets manufacturers list "meat and animal derivatives" instead of naming exact cuts or species. It can include muscle meat, but also organs, fat trimmings, blood, or bone meal from various animals. Nutritionally this is normal food for dogs and cats (a protein and fat source), similar to what's in many commercial diets worldwide. Nobody needs to worry about it as a toxin — the practical issue is transparency, not safety.
