citric acid
A natural fruit acid used as a flavoring and preservative; safe at all normal food and cosmetic levels.
Citric acid occurs naturally in citrus fruits and is made industrially by fermenting sugar with a mold. It's used to add tartness, adjust acidity, and help preserve foods and cosmetics. At the amounts used in food, drinks, or skincare, it's considered safe for almost everyone.

Why it matters
Citric acid is the sour-tasting acid found in lemons, limes, and other citrus fruit. In food it's used to add tang, balance sweetness, and act as a preservative by lowering pH so bacteria grow less easily. In cosmetics it adjusts the acidity (pH) of creams and cleansers. Your own body also makes and uses citric acid as part of normal energy metabolism (it's a key step in the citric acid cycle, the process cells use to turn food into energy). Because it's already part of normal biology, there's nothing unusual for the body to process.
