Spirulina

LabiIedarbības ceļš: Norīts

A nutrient-rich algae that's safe as food or supplement, with a few contamination and allergy caveats.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae eaten as a whole food or used as a natural blue-green coloring in supplements, powders, and candies. At normal food and supplement doses it's well tolerated, but poor-quality supplements can carry contaminants, and a few groups should be more careful.

Why it matters

Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria (often called blue-green algae) grown in water and dried into powder or extract. It's rich in protein, iron, and B vitamins, and its blue pigment (phycocyanin) is used to color foods naturally instead of using synthetic dyes. Most people eat it as a health-food supplement (tablets, powders, smoothies) or find it as a coloring in candy, drinks, and snacks. For the vast majority of people it's just a nutrient-dense food ingredient with no special risk.
