Kiwi
A nutrient-rich fruit, safe for most people, but a known allergen for some.
Kiwi is a whole food packed with vitamin C, vitamin K, fibre and potassium. For the vast majority of people it's simply healthy food, but it's one of the more common fruit allergens and can trigger reactions ranging from mild mouth itching to, rarely, severe anaphylaxis.

Why it matters
Kiwi is a fruit, not an additive or chemical - there's no dose or exposure calculation needed the way there is for a preservative. It's eaten for taste and nutrition: it's rich in vitamin C (more per 100g than an orange), vitamin K, fibre, folate and potassium, plus an enzyme called actinidin that helps break down protein. For almost everyone it's a beneficial, ordinary food. The main group who need to care are people with a kiwi allergy or a related pollen-food allergy, since kiwi contains several proteins that the immune system can mistake for allergens.
