Terms of service
Last updated September 9, 2026
These terms govern your use of willithurt.me ("the service"), operated by Scott Agirs, Riga, Latvia ("we", "us"). By using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
1. What the service is
willithurt.me lets you look up a product by its barcode and shows a plain-language assessment of whether its ingredients may be harmful, with the reasoning and the sources behind it. It also lets you add products that are missing, correct existing ones, keep a history of your scans and report problems.
The service is free and provided "as is". We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it at any time. We aim for high availability but do not guarantee it.
2. Not medical, legal or safety advice
Everything on willithurt.me is general information. It is not medical, nutritional, veterinary, legal or safety advice, and it is not a substitute for the product label, the manufacturer's instructions or a qualified professional. Do not rely on it to decide whether a product is safe for you, a child, an animal or someone with an allergy, intolerance, pregnancy or medical condition.
In an emergency contact your local emergency number or poison-control centre. Always follow the label.
3. AI-generated content
Product verdicts, explanations, key points and ingredient summaries are generated automatically by a large language model from public data sources (listed on the Data sources page) and, where a community member has uploaded them, from label photos read by AI. They are reviewed by people only in part, and after publication. This notice is provided in line with the transparency obligations of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act.
AI-generated content can be wrong, incomplete or out of date: the model may misread a label, miss an ingredient, or apply a regulation incorrectly. Where the evidence is thin, the service says "not enough evidence" rather than guessing, but it can still make mistakes. Treat every verdict as a starting point for your own judgement, and use the "Report a problem" tool when you see an error.
The verdicts express our editorial opinion derived from the cited sources. They are not statements by the source databases, regulators or manufacturers.
4. Accounts
You can use most of the service without signing in. Signing in (by email magic link or Google) lets you keep your history across devices and contribute. You are responsible for keeping access to your email account secure and for everything done through your account. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
5. Your contributions
When you add or correct a product — photos, ingredient text, names, corrections — you keep any copyright you hold in that content. You grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual licence to store, reproduce, adapt (for example by cropping a photo or normalising text), publish and distribute it as part of the service.
So that your effort helps everyone, you also agree that we may share your contributions with open product databases — currently Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts, Open Products Facts and Open Pet Food Facts — under their licences: the Open Database Licence (ODbL) for data and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) for photos. Contributions are credited to a generic willithurt.me account, never to you personally.
Only contribute what you are entitled to share: photos you took yourself of retail packaging, and facts you read from the label. Do not upload photos of people, receipts, documents or anything personal, and do not copy text or images from other websites.
Community-added products are shown with an "Unverified" badge until our team has checked them. We may edit, merge, hide or remove contributions at any time, for example when they are inaccurate, duplicated, illegal or off-topic.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- upload content that is illegal, defamatory, infringing, obscene, hateful or misleading, or that contains other people's personal data;
- add fake products, deliberately wrong ingredients or verdict-gaming content;
- scrape, bulk-download or mirror the service, or use it to build a competing database, beyond what the open-data licences of the underlying sources allow;
- probe, overload or interfere with the service, bypass rate limits, or access accounts or admin areas that are not yours;
- use the service to make claims about products in advertising or commerce without independent verification.
7. Reporting problems, moderation and the Digital Services Act
Every product and ingredient page has a "Report a problem" tool. It is our notice-and-action mechanism under Articles 16–17 of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). You can use it whether or not you are signed in, and you may give an email address if you want to hear back.
We review reports within 7 days. If we take action — or decide not to — and you gave an email address, we send you a short statement of reasons explaining the decision. Moderation decisions may hide or remove content, mark it as unverified, or restrict an account.
If you disagree with a decision about your content or your report, you may complain within six months by emailing hello@willithurt.me with the report reference. A person who was not involved in the original decision will review it and reply. Out-of-court dispute settlement bodies certified under the DSA and the courts remain available to you.
Repeated manifestly unfounded reports, or repeated submission of illegal content, may lead to a temporary suspension of the reporting tool or of the account, after a warning.
8. Intellectual property
The service's name, design, code and our own editorial content (verdicts, explanations, blog posts) are ours or licensed to us. Product data and images come from the sources listed on the Data sources page under their respective licences; product names and brands belong to their owners and are shown for identification only.
You may quote or link to our pages for personal, non-commercial purposes with attribution. Ask us before any other reuse.
9. Termination
You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. We may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms, after a warning where reasonable, and immediately for serious or repeated breaches. Sections 2, 3, 5, 10 and 11 survive termination.
10. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided without warranties of any kind, and we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from reliance on its content, from its unavailability, or from content contributed by other users. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your statutory rights as a consumer in your country of residence.
Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to EUR 100.
11. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Latvia. Disputes are subject to the courts of Latvia, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-protection rules that let you bring a claim in your own country. Consumers in the EU may also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. We will change the "last updated" date and, for material changes, show a notice in the app at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use after that date means you accept the new terms.
